With days and nights so busy these days, don’t you sit back and wonder how that stylish gal or guy always looks so, well, #Stylish???  Me tooo!  Well, one of their dirty secrets is that they rewear and rework wardrobe staples, care very little about specific brands and are meticulous about the fit of clothing.

They also have an arsenal of simple fashion formulas they follow when getting dressed. For example, they pair voluminous clothing with something skinny and more structured.  An oversized sweater ALWAYS works with skinny jeans.   Those chic girls know that textured items like fur and feathers work magic with smoother fabrics like cotton and denim. Fancy skirts or pants pair perfectly with casual wardrobe staples like cable knit sweaters and denim.

My long-time friend and uber chic fashion buddy Dashawn Woolfolk, D for short, and I are teaming up to spill the tea on fashion formulas that you can use to easily create your own street stopping #ThatsSoChic ensembles.

The first one is what we call “Off Duty Chic” where we mix Denim + Texture + Glamour.  I use “off-duty” loosely because I mean, really, when are we ever actually “off” these days?   Never!  This look is perfect for picking up the kids from school or soccer, catching a flight at the airport, meeting girlfriends for Saturday brunch or even crushing that next creative meeting depending on your workflow environment.

The outfit featured here is a classic layered look. It begins with a t-shirt thin dove gray turtleneck tucked into high waisted, cropped distressed jeans (the “Denim”).  Layered on top of the turtleneck is a classic white blazer and taupe gray shearling vest (the “Texture”).  To finish this look, we added leather pink sneakers with rhinestone details, thin wool socks with gold thread, small pearl/gold earrings, quirky oversized rose gold glasses and a statement blush nude crossbody bag (the “Glamour”).

The “Off-Duty Chic” Fashion Formula

  1. Denim –  Jeans of course count here but think about layering a denim jacket or denim shirt under a fur vest
  2. Texture –  Anything that has 3-dimensional feels such as fur, feathers or even chunky knits like cable/cashmere
  3. Glamour – Add some blingy accessories to balance the denim and up the glam factor.  Think pearls, sparkly earrings or a flashy handbag/shoe.

With social media darlings seemingly chic all the time (you know they must fail some of the time) Dashawn and I understand your desire to put together a stylish outfit with little time and sometimes a limited budget.  For this reason, we created our fail safe fashion formulas to help you create sartorial magic.  The great thing is that you can find denim, texture and glamour at every price point from JcPenny and Amazon to Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.  How-so-eva, before you even step foot in a store or click purchase online, we want you to start by taking a look in your closet.  Just for fun, see if you can put together an Off-Duty-Chic ensemble with what you already own.

  3. Glamour: Blingy accessories balance the denim and up the glam factor.  Think pearls, sparkly earrings, sunglasses, a statement necklace or a flashy handbag/shoe.  Don’t go overboard here.  You want a couple bright touches but not so much that it competes with the texture or makes you look like a rose bowl float.
